Yalda night or Challah night is one of the oldest Iranian and Zoroastrian festivals . In this celebration, the passing of the longest night of the year and the subsequent lengthening of the days in the Northern Hemisphere , which coincides with the winter solstice , are commemorated.  Shab Chele means between sunset on December 30 (the last day of autumn ) and sunrise on January 1 (the first day of winter ). Iranian families usually prepare and eat together all kinds of fruits on this night, most commonly watermelons , pomegranates , and persimmons . Shahnameh reading and telling stories of family elders to other family members, as well as fortune-telling with Divan Hafez, are also common.
