Così fan tutte has all the charm, wit and appeal of a Shakespeare comedy: the gender politics, the gentle satire of social hierarchy, the absurd disguises, the ‘wife-swapping’, and the sparkling dénouement, all of which have made this opera not only one of Mozart’s most famous, but one of the most performed operas in the canon.

The glorious score includes some of Mozart’s most expressive lyrical arias, some of his most virtuosic coloratura writing, and two dazzling finales which show his genius for comic ensemble counterpoint at its best.

This production uses an English translation by Ruth and Thomas Martin, and updates the action to a group of Cambridge students in the ‘Golden Summer of 1914’, to demonstrate that until the First World War, European society was little different to that which Mozart would have recognised, with its bourgeois acceptance of gender roles, social standing and jingoistic militarism.

A group of naïve Cambridge students with their tangled relationships and gullible over-emotionalism, before a backdrop of distant war, presents the perfect opportunity to make this production not merely a witty evening of Mozartian effulgence, but an original take on the social satire which is so characteristic of Da Ponte’s libretti.
