Kanshiram was born into a Raidasi Sikh family on 15 March 1934 in Rupnagar, Punjab. Kanshiram was the eldest of siblings. After graduation, Kanshiram worked at DRDO, Pune. In 1984, he quit the job and founded the Bahujan Samaj Party. Kanshiram, who was active in the politics of Uttar Pradesh, was also a member of the Lok Sabha. Kanshiram always opposed those doing politics in the name of Dalits. He not only made Mayawati the CM of Uttar Pradesh, also declared her his successor.

पंजाब के रूपनगर में 15 मार्च 1934 को कांशीराम का जन्म रैदासी सिख परिवार में हुआ। कांशीराम भाई-बहनों में सबसे बड़े थे। ग्रेजुएशन के बाद कांशीराम ने पुणे के डीआरडीओ में जॉब किया। नौकरी छोड़कर 1984 में कांशीराम ने बहुजन समाज पार्टी की स्थापना की। उत्तरप्रदेश की राजनीति में सक्रिय रहने वाले कांशीराम लोकसभा के सदस्य भी रहे। दलितों के नाम पर राजनीति करने वालों का कांशीराम ने हमेशा विरोध किया। उन्होंने ना सिर्फ मायावती को उत्तरप्रदेश का सीएम बनाया, बल्कि, उन्हें अपना उत्तराधिकारी भी घोषित कर दिया।
