Diane Lau is among tens of thousands of Hongkongers struggling to make ends meet after the coronavirus pandemic hit her city on the heels of anti-government protests that began in June 2019. The 34-year-old single mother, lost her job in February 2020, and has since been making ends meet with money borrowed from her mother and government subsidies. After Covid-19 started to spread in the city, Hong Kong’s jobless rate spiked to 6.2 per cent from April to June 2020, the highest in 15 years and worse than the figure was after the 2008 global financial crisis. While many have lost jobs, others have had to take pay cuts or told to go on unpaid leave with no assurances about when and if they will go back to work.
