Maryam Mirzakhani (1977 - 2017) was the first and only woman to receive the Fields Medal in 2014, one of the highest honors in mathematics.
Her life and her career as well as the history of the Fields Medal are the center of this "Leipzig Talk on Mathematics".
The work of almost all Fields medalists is accessible only to a small number of specialists. Fortunately, in the case of Mirzakhani, this is different. This lecture sheds light on one of her fields of work and on a particularly beautiful result she has achieved. Maryam Mirzakhani worked on hyperbolic geometry, the investigation of certain curved surfaces. In her doctoral thesis, she studied geodesics on these surfaces.
These are curves that represent the shortest possible connection between points. She managed to find a very simple formula for the number of such curves, solveing a decade-old problem in the field.

A lecture by Prof. dr. Wilhelm Singhof (Heinrich Heine University of Dusseldorf).
