The Monte Sano Archeological Complex mounds are/were the oldest known mounds in the Americas. They were only briefly researched over a four day period in 1967 while they faced imminent destruction to build a highway, which eventually became a place of industry in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Researchers discovered many artifacts, including points, beads and pottery. Mound A was the oldest, at rough estimates between 5000 and 5500 BCE. This is significantly older than the currently confirmed mound complex at Watson Brake. It's also suggested that Mound A and B are related to the same culture who constructed the mounds at LSU (the LSU mounds may be the oldest surviving mound that we know of). Mound B is roughly 2000 years younger.  One of the strangest features of Mound A however, is that within the mound was a submound propping up a rectangular platform that was likely used as a crematorium, probably for an important figure of this culture whom they wished to honor and buried with exotic artifacts that had come from hundreds of miles away. This discovery is quite unlike other mounds.
