The distance between the two is only about 3.8 km, and interestingly, the strait between them freezes over in winter, allowing us to walk from one island to the other.
However, what makes the Diomede Islands so unique is the fact that the two islands are separated by an International Time Zone line. As a result, Big Diomede Island was almost a day earlier than Little Diomede Island! So, if you start your walking journey from Little Diomede on Monday at 05:00 am and spend an hour traveling, you will arrive at Big Diomede on Tuesday at 02:00 morning. And when you return from the Big Island to the Small Island, it's as if you've traveled back in time for 20 hours!
