HEYYY! If you are new to my channel, my name is Mallory and I work as a graphic designer in Raleigh, North Carolina. Today I wanted to sit down and talk a bit about how I decided to go into Graphic Design, as well as the pros/cons to generalizing/specializing and key skills you need to have to be a working design professional.

I can speak from only my experience, so know that these topics may look different for you. This is also just an overview video and I plan on going deeper into design related topics. Let me know if there is anything specific you want me to discuss!

I have a bachelor's degree in Graphic Design and a Master's Certificate in User Experience Design. I've worked as an in house designer, a freelancer, and an agency designer for companies ranging in sizes between 3 - 15,000+ employees. With this experience, I have a diverse set of knowledge and tips to share with other creatives trying to connect or grow their skills.

With experience working in the industry, here are some key tips:

1. Be adaptable:
You need to be able to quickly change and work to the environment and tasks that are given to you. The design industry is constantly evolving and growing, so this means that the tasks and opportunities that come to you will continue to change. Specifically, this means you should be comfortable with pushing your design skills into different mediums that you originally intended to specialize in. The good thing about design and art fundamentals is that it allows you to apply them to whatever medium or industry you are asked to work in.

2. Continue to learn:
The print, digital, and experience design industry continues to change everyday. This is due to increasing efforts in technology and the ebb and flow of trends. While design trends come and go, it is important to stay up to date with the latest technology and design software so you are capable to tackle new tasks and stay relevant in such a saturated and competitive industry. Utilize online learning and free resources to improve your skills and knowledge.

3. Be faster and more efficient
At first when you are starting out and practicing, you may be taking weeks to work and perfect a project. When you enter into your career you will see that the design/advertisement/marketing industry works fast. There are time where you will be given a task and asked to do it within 1 hour, which is very stressful, but definitely the reality. Don't stress, because as you gain experience you will become faster and more efficient. If you work for an agency, you will start to learn your clients and the type of work they love and approve. Taking time to listen carefully will help you make better decisions, faster.

I hope these design industry tips help you out!
