An internal fight over whether Google built technology with human-like consciousness has spilled into the open, exposing the ambitions and risks inherent in artificial intelligence that can feel all too real. The Silicon Valley giant suspended one of its engineers last week who argued the firm's AI system LaMDA seemed "sentient," a claim Google officially disagrees with. Joining FRANCE 24 to weigh in on this debate is Dr. Kate Crawford, Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research and Co-Founder / former Director of Research at the AI Now Institute at NYU. Dr. Crawford does not agree that LaMDA is "sentient artificial intelligence," pointing out that "we've had chatbots like this for many decades. And while they can seem intelligent, if you're conducting a conversation with them, they are in fact just trained on large amounts of text that's drawn primarily from the internet." The biggest concern, asserts Dr. Crawford, should be "the types of biases or stereotypes that are very commonly built into these models. They are famous for producing forms of speech that are very hateful, full of misinformation or dehumanizing language." And she warns that this is "a much harder problem for the tech companies to solve."
