the onin war was a civil war that lasted 1467-1477, during the Muromachi period in Japan. Ōnin refers to the Japanese time when the war started; the war ended during the Bunmei era. A dispute between a high-ranking official, Hosokawa Katsumoto, and a regional gentleman, Yamana Sōzen, escalated into a nationwide civil war involving the Ashikaga shogunate and a rowdy demy in many regions of Japan.

The Onin Conflict started as a disagreement over who should succeed Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa. In 1464, Yoshimasa had no heir. He persuaded his younger brother, Ashikaga Yoshimi, to leave the life of a monk, and called him heir. In 1465, the unexpected birth of a son to Yoshimasa called these plans into question. The infant, Yoshihisa, led to a success crisis with two competing factions. On one side was the shogun and his brother, along with the shogun's deputy, Hosokawa. On the other side were the mother of Yoshihisa, Hino Tomiko, and her ally Yamana, who was governor of several provinces the onin war 1477
