Qualcomm Technologies is at the forefront of wireless R&D for the industrial IoT, to help verticals integrate the latest technologies at a scale made possible with high performance 5G connectivity.

At MWC 2022, Qualcomm shares a look at its live over-the-air 5G time sensitive networking (TSN) testbed in San Diego, which now features advancements in efficient ultra-reliable wireless connectivity for the smart factory. Qualcomm is also building a new 5G/6G innovation platform in Lannion, France, for end-to-end research and collaboration with partners on new verticals and use cases, such as extended reality, industrial IoT, drones, and other mission-critical applications .

Upgrades to the San Diego over-the-air 5G TSN testbed include a disaggregated 5G radio access network (RAN), and a RAN intelligent controller (RIC) based on the O-RAN framework. Qualcomm demonstrated intelligent coordinated multipoint transmissions (CoMP) as a RIC application, where machine learning on the RIC helps dynamically adapt radio unit (RU) clusters for CoMP, to save air interface resources without compromising on six-nines reliability (99.9999%) for mission-critical applications.

Qualcomm also improved its 5G sidelink setup with dynamic path switching, which can increase air interface capacity with device-to-device communications while maintaining 99.9999% overall reliability.

With these 5G innovations for the industrial IoT, smart factories can reliably scale flexible manufacturing systems to include more wirelessly connected sensors, actuators, and controllers.

We are also showcasing our 5G/6G innovation platform in Lannion, France, which is designed for end-to-end research on new verticals. The platform will enable Qualcomm to research with partners new 5G and 6G solutions in areas such as private networks, XR, Industrial IOT, and drones.

The innovation platform includes an advanced prototype radio access network that provides 5G mmWave and can be updated with future 5G and 6G features. Completing the innovation platform are state-of-the-art reference platforms like the Qualcomm Mobile Test Platform for testing the latest 5G features and XR headsets that include perception, tracking, video decode, and reprojection features.

The innovation platform utilizes an edge cloud server to host computationally-demanding applications that require low-latency.

With our 5G system-level optimizations, the innovation platform can support a consistent throughput of over 100 Mbps, with an average 5G roundtrip time of less than 15ms. This level of speed and latency enables research and testing of a variety of use cases, including boundless XR.
