News Corp Australia Chairman Michael Miller has welcomed the High Court's decision to throw out the Australian Federal Police's warrant to search the home of journalist Annika Smethurst.

The AFP last year raided Ms Smethurst's Canberra home over stories she wrote detailing secret plans to expand the government’s domestic spying powers.

In a unanimous decision handed down today, the warrant used by the AFP was deemed invalid as it did not contain a specific offence.

However, an injunction requesting the return of the information collected by the AFP from Ms Smethurst was denied.

Mr Miller released a statement saying the High Court sent an "indisputable message by ruling that Federal Police must obey the law and that their raid on journalist Annika Smethurst's home was illegal."

"It's time for the Federal Government to bring this sorry mess to a prompt end."
