STORYLINE:
The US military remains cautiously optimistic that three American soldiers who disappeared after a deadly ambush last weekend can be found alive, a US officer said Thursday.
The three American soldiers went missing after a weekend attack south of Baghdad in which four US troopers and one Iraqi were killed.
A group with links to al-Qaida claimed responsibility and said it had captured the Americans.
US officials said the 4-thousand U.S. troops and 2-thousand Iraqis searching for the three missing soldiers had found "a number of persons who are extremely important, potentially providing us good intelligence".
He said some of the detainees may have been directly involved in the attack in a rural area near the town of Youssifiyah, 20 kilometres (12 miles) south of Baghdad.
Video released by the US Department of Defence shows US and Iraqi soldiers combing through Youssifiyah Wednesday.
Squad Leader Timothy Scott Chapman said he was hopeful that the missing soldiers would "come up alive."
