(30 Dec 2013) A human case of avian flu H9N2 has been confirmed in Hong Kong, a government official said on Monday.
The patient, an 86-year-old man, lives in Shenzhen, a city in Guangdong province in southern China.
He was returning to Hong Kong on Saturday and asked for treatment.
Dr Leung Ting-hung, controller at the Department of Health's Centre for Health Protection, said the man developed chills and a cough with sputum around 28 December, and tested positive for the influenza A (H9N2) virus.
He said the centre was investigating the source of the infection.
People who have been in contact with the patient in Shenzhen have not shown symptoms of the virus, the centre said.
Leung added that the virus was commonly found in poultry and so far there was no evidence of human to human transmission.
He said the virus is milder than H7N9 and usually causes mild respiratory infections.
"We are stepping up all the necessary control measures, we'll continue to keep up our alert on possible cases," Dr Leung said.
The centre has informed its counterpart organisation in Guangdong province.
The first confirmed human case of H9N2 in Hong Kong was in 1999.
