At the beginning of the Russian revolution in March 1917 Emperor Nicholas II was deposed and the Russian monarchy dissolved
Over the next 16 months the Romanov family were placed under house arrest and relocated several times as the Bolsheviks grew in power
Just after midnight on July 17, 1918 the family was led to the basement of Ipatiev House and executed, thus ending the Russian Royal lineage
The bodies were taken to the Koptyaki forest and dumped in unmarked graves. They were rediscovered in 1979 and 2007
A church now stands at the site of the execution
