Retinal detachment is an ophthalmological (eye) condition involving the tear, ripping, or separation (“detachment”) of the light-sensitive layer (the retina) from other layers within the eye. There are 3 types of retinal detachment, each of which has their own risk factors and pathophysiological mechanisms. In this lesson, we discuss the risk factors for each type of retinal detachment, including the signs and symptoms, how it is diagnosed and how it is treated by clinicians.
