This game was incredible. The gameplay, the ambiance, the atmosphere... It was damn near perfect. It was punishing, in all the best ways possible. It felt so satisfying having the perfect run to get through the next boss. It Takes Two is still the GOTY in my opinion, but this game comes in a close second.
As for the game movie, there are some traditional cinematic "cutscenes" here and there, but most of the story is told through the house scenes and through audio logs. Since the environment is constantly changing anyway, there is not set path to follow, and thus it can make the game movie feel a bit disjointed at times. But that's how the game is supposed to feel, so I feel like it works for game movie purposes. Also, this is a Roguelike game, so deaths are a big part of the whole experience. We left a bunch of the deaths in since it's stitched into the narrative.
