t is common to see a buffalo herd of anywhere between 50 and 500 individuals, and that is what makes this sighting so extraordinary. In the Mababe Concession, there were two herds consisting of around 1-2000 buffalos each, this alone would have been a sight to behold… however, during the week that we were in Botswana the two herds joined together as a massive herd of at least 2000 individuals.

Gathering in such large groups helps the animal dissuade predators like lions, leopards, hyenas, and African wild dogs. Although, older male buffalos often split off in smaller clusters or on their own - which we also saw during our time (we saw bull herds of up to 30). Meanwhile, calves spend up to a year and a half suckling and are completely dependent on their mothers during this time, thus tend to stay deep in the herd for safety. That said, lions also learn to specialise in catching buffalo - large quantities of meat is required to feed big prides and big prides are often able to catch buffalo more easily.
