Using animations, we give an explanation of the sound barrier, shock waves and sonic booms.  For an object traveling Mach 0.5 (Mach number is the ratio of the speed of the object to the speed of sound), in the wave animation, we see the wave fronts compressed in the direction of motion due to the Doppler effect for a moving source.  Then, at Mach 1.0, we see the formation of the sound barrier, from all the wave fronts overlapping in the direction of motion.

After breaking the sound barrier we study two cases of supersonic flight at Mach 1.5 and Mach 2.0, and we see the shock wave cone form after the sound barrier breaking.  This is what causes a sonic boom for an obsever on the ground.  In addition, we learn how to calculate the angle of a shock wave cone based on the velocity of the object and the speed of sound.
