A whole grain has all 3 parts: bran, germ & endosperm. Refined grains are predominantly the endosperm (carbohydrate rich but with far fewer micronutrients); bran & germ have been removed to varying degrees. I prefer to consume whole grains with all three parts: bran, germ & endosperm.

WHOLE GRAINS: Brown rice (or red rice or purple rice or black rice) is a whole grain. Whole wheat (and cracked wheat or 'dalia') is a whole grain.

REFINED GRAINS: Brown rice can be turned into polished rice (white rice), which in turn can be converted into rice flour, puffed rice ('murmura') or 'poha' (flattened rice). Whole wheat can be turned into refined flour or 'white atta' or 'maida'.

Question: Is sooji / rava / semolina a whole grain or a refined grain?
