The only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Haiti is the National History Park. These Haitian monuments date from the beginning of the 19th century, when Haiti proclaimed its independence. The Palace of Sans Souci, the buildings at Ramiers and, in particular, the Citadel serve as universal symbols of liberty, being the first monuments to be constructed by black slaves who had gained their freedom.
The road to the Citadel involves a half-hour motorcycle ride along a paved mountain road and a 15-minute horse ride. But it's worth it. At the end of the path, at an altitude of 1000 meters, awaits the largest fortress in the Western Hemisphere, built shortly after Haiti gained independence. The fortress is guarded by 365 cannons that have never been fired, accompanied by 10,000 cannonballs. Unlike the Sans Souci Palace, the fortress was never completed; the life of the first king of Haiti ended earlier.
The second part of the World Heritage Site. The Palace of Sans Souci (which translates as “without worries”) was built by the black king of Haiti, Henri Christophe, in 1813 to house his family. A few years later, the king shot himself in this palace with a silver bullet, and his son was stabbed to death by the rebels.
