THIS PROCESS IS CALLED CHLOR-ALKALI BECAUSE THE MAIN  PRODUCTS FORMED ARE CHLORINE GAS (CHLOR) AND SODIUM HYDROXIDE SOLUTION (ALKALI).WHICH IS VERY USEFUL IN INDUSTRIAL PURPOSE.
IN THIS PROCESS WE TAKE A BEAKER HALF FILLED WITH WATER & WE ADD SODIUM CHLORIDE SALT TO MAKE IT BRINE SOLUTION.WE PUT TWO ELECTRODES IN THE ELECTROLYTE & THESE ELECTRODES ARE CLOSED WITH INVERTED TEST TUBE FULL OF WATER SO THE GAS LIBERATED GET COLLECT IN THE INVERTED TEST TUBE.THE BATTERY IS CONNECTED TO BOTH THE ELECTRODES SO THAT ONE ELECTRODE BECOME POSITIVE i.e., ANODE & ANOTHER BECOME NEGATIVE i.e., CATHODE.
WHEN CURRENT IS PASSED THROUGH THE ELECTROLYTE ,HYDROGEN GAS IS LIBERATED AT THE CATHODE WHICH GETS COLLECTED IN THE INVERTED TEST TUBE.AT THE ANODE  YELLOWISH-GREEN COLOURED  CHLORINE GAS IS LIBERATED WHICH IS ALSO COLLECTED IN THE INVERTED TEST TUBE.ANOTHER PRODUCT i.e., SODIUM HYDROXIDE REMAINS IN THE BEAKER AS AN ALKALI.
HYDROGEN GAS IS TESTED WITH A POP SOUND WHEN A BURNING MATCH STICK BROUGHT NEAR IT.
CHLORINE GAS IS TESTED BY PUTTING A COLOURED PETAL OF ROSE IN THE TEST TUBE IN WHICH THIS CHLORINE GAS IS COLLECTED.THE COLOURED PETAL GETS DECOLOURISED SHOWING THE PRESENCE OF CHLORINE GAS.
ALKALI i.e., SODIUM HYDROXIDE PRESENT IN THE BEAKER IN THE FORM OF SOLUTION CAN BE TESTED BY PUTTING 2 TO 3 DROPS OF PHENOLPHTHALEIN INDICATOR WHERE THE SOLUTIONS CHANGES COLOUR TO PINK COLOUR SHOWING THE PRESENCE OF ALKALI.
