1986: Shining With Style

Alfred Claude Poole Sr., better known to the world as Dr. Cool, the world's greatest shoe shine man, does his stuff for WTVJ's Ileana Bravo in this news story.

Roy Lee Walker, the Florida State Champion, also shows off his rag-popping prowess. The men went head-to-head -- or was it rag-to-rag? -- in a competition shortly after this clip aired in 1986.

A native of Waycross, Georgia, Dr. Cool shined shoes, always in his trademark tuxedo, at the Fifth Street Gym in the mid-1980s. He also worked as a boxing trainer and soaked up fame.

"I'm the only shoe shine man who's got publicity photos," he boasted in 1985. "I'm the only one who's been on 'Miami Vice.'"
