‪@dallasstoneworks‬ - This specimen features the uncommon mineral Cryolite with Siderite from Ivigtut, a now largely abandoned mining town in Greenland.  Ivigtut was the location of the world's largest known reserve of Cryolite, a mineral that was important in the process of extracting aluminum.  The cryolite mine was an open pit that extended down well below sea level. The reserve eventually ran out in the late 1980s and the mine was allowed to flood, making specimens harder to come by.   This piece was formerly part of the John S Whatley Jr. Collection and includes a hand written inventory card.
