It has been heralded as the best selling anime internationally since Hayao Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away” and has taken the world by storm. Mokoto Shinkai’s hit 2016 film left people in tears and gave him international acclaim, taking the number one spot for highest-grossing anime film of all time, a title that is nothing less than daunting. The actual film tells the story Mitsuha and Taki, two ordinary highschoolers separated not only by distance but also by time. When a comet that only comes once every 1200 years appears for all the world to see, it sets off a chain of events that make the two unlikely teens into literal star crossed lovers.
Taki and Mitsuha switch bodies, Freaky Friday style, and come to learn more about one another and also fill a void each of them was searching for. They end up not only searching for the other person’s name but also, love. Of course, it is not as straightforward as it sounds. The two lead very different lives with Taki living in Tokyo and Mitsuha living in the country. The film also presents its narrative out of order and while it’s not a super-duper complex story, it will take a few watchings to fully grasp the plot. That is where we come in.
