A Vanilla slice is a very simple thing - just a slab of vanilla-flavoured egg custard sandwiched between puff pastry. Both Australia and New Zealand claim the vanilla slice as their own invention. Vanilla slices sometimes have icing on top or a glaze made from passionfruit. This version doesn't, but it's far from 'plain vanilla'. It's delicious.
