Howard Phillips Lovecraft è stato uno scrittore americano di narrativa fantastica, fantascientifica e horror. Famoso per la creazione del mito di Cthulhu ha influenzato la cinematografia horror a partire dagli anni 60. Ha creato il genere dell'horror cosmico, che enfatizza l'orrore dell'ignoto e dell'incomprensibile; un terrore proveniente da altre dimensioni, della conoscenza proibita e pericolosa, della follia, con influenze non umane, religione e superstizione, destino e dell'inevitabilità e dei rischi associati alle scoperte scientifiche.
