Arbaeen procession is the biggest annual procession and public gathering in the world. This event involves the movement of large numbers of Shia Muslims from around the Iraqi borders to the city of Karbala, south of Baghdad, to gather them all on the 40th day after death. Hossein bin Ali becomes the third imam of Shiites in the event of Ashura.

It is believed that Hussain Ibn Ali, the Muslim saint who is worshiped, transcended all cultural boundaries and is a symbol of universal freedom and compassion. The atmosphere of this pilgrimage has been described as "with the serenity and solidarity of many congregations".
According to some scholars, marching on the day of Arbaeen has been common among Shiites since the time of the Shia imams. Seyyed Muhammad Ali Qazi Tabatabai considered the Arbaeen procession as a tradition and continuous behavior of the Shiites since the time of the Imams of Athar (a.s.), who also adhered to this movement during the time of the Umayyads and the Abbasids.

It is said that this forgotten tradition was revived by Muhaddith Nouri (born: January 14, 1217, died: Mehr 8, 1281). And he mentioned the presence of mourning delegations in it, some of them gave eulogies in Turkish, Arabic, Farsi and Urdu languages. The book Adab al-Taf was published in 1388/1967 and its author estimated the number of Arbaeen pilgrims to be more than one million.

With the arrival of the first type of cars in the region, caravan trips were stopped and trips were formed in a new way. Then, after some time and with the introduction of Seyyed Mahmoud Hosseini Shahroudi as one of the teachers and teachers with a significant spiritual influence in the Najaf area due to his commitment and insistence on walking to Karbala, the issue of walking to Karbala as a holy journey was raised. It was brought up again and became popular among the students of Najaf, and some Iranians also accompanied them in the pilgrimage.
Iraqi pilgrims move from their cities to Karbala. But most Iranian pilgrims choose the route from Najaf to Karbala for walking. The walking distance between these two cities is about 80 kilometers. There are 1452 pillars on the road from Najaf to Karbala, the distance between each pillar is 50 meters. Walking the whole route takes about 25 to 30 hours. The best time to start the trip is 16.00. Some pilgrims start their journey from cities such as Basra, which is about 520 kilometers (320 miles) from Karbala.
The number of Iranians participating in the Arbaeen gathering has increased from 40,000 to 2,200,000 in 1989-1995, which indicates a 55-fold increase in the number of pilgrims in the past 6 years, which has increased by more than 130%. Every year and in 1996, more than 3 million pilgrims from Iran have participated in this ceremony.

Various statistics of all the participants in the Arbaeen gathering have been presented. The number of people who entered Karbala in 2014 is reported to be nearly 17 million people. According to the French newspaper Le Monde, in 2014, more than 17 million people gathered in Karbala despite the threat of attack (during the Arbaeen ceremony). According to other sources, the number of marchers towards Karbala this year is 20 million.

The Iraqi Minister of Roads announced in 2015 that the number of Arbaeen pilgrims exceeded 26 million.

In 2017 until November 12, the number of visas issued to Iranians was 1 million and 800 thousand. In 2018, it was decided that Iraq and Iran visas would be free, which was first implemented by Iran, and Iraq removed its country's visa a few days before Muharram 1441 AH. From the first of Muharram to the tenth of Safar 1398, one million pilgrims entered the territory of Iraq from Mehran border of Ilam province alone.
