A 3D reconstruction of the Old Northgate in Chester as it may have appeared just before the English Civil War. I have based the gate on a Randle Holme drawing from the period which can be seen at the start of the video. The buildings outside the walls were pulled down between 1642-44 to prevent cover for the besieging Parliamentary force so the appearance of the Little St John Hospital (site of the Bluecoat Centre today) and houses outside the walls are conjectural. The gate itself continued to change and expand, as it also housed the city Gaol until around 1810 when it was rebuilt by Thomas Harrison. The ditch before the wall follows the line of the original Roman defences. The Shropshire Union Canal was cut along the line of the Northern ditch in the 1770s.

The video Was produced with Blender, 3DCoat, Unity5 and Premiere pro.
