based on G M Wickens 1974 translation.
Here is the fourth video of a new section on my channel: Persian Literature. April 21 (some years on April 20) is ‘Saadi Day’, the National Commemoration Day of the well-known Iranian poet, Saadi Shirazi (known as the Master of Speech), born in Shiraz City around 1200. He is not only famous in Persian-speaking countries, but he has also been quoted in western sources. He is recognized for the quality of his writings, and for the depth of his social and moral thoughts.
Saadi’s best-known masterpieces are Bustan (The Orchard) completed in 1257 and Gulistan (The Flower Garden) in 1258.
Poem:
شبی یاد دارم که چشمم نخفت
شنیدم که پروانه با شمع گفت
که من عاشقم گر بسوزم رواست
تو را گریه و سوز باری چراست؟
بگفت ای هوادار مسکین من
برفت انگبین یار شیرین من
چو شیرینی از من به در می‌رود
چو فرهادم آتش به سر می‌رود
همی گفت و هر لحظه سیلاب درد
فرو می‌دویدش به رخسار زرد
که ای مدعی عشق کار تو نیست
که نه صبر داری نه یارای ایست
تو بگریزی از پیش یک شعله خام
من استاده‌ام تا بسوزم تمام
تو را آتش عشق اگر پر بسوخت
مرا بین که از پای تا سر بسوخت
همه شب در این گفت و گو بود شمع
به دیدار او وقت اصحاب، جمع
نرفته ز شب همچنان بهره‌ای
که ناگه بکشتش پریچهره‌ای
همی گفت و می‌رفت دودش به سر
که این است پایان عشق، ای پسر
اگر عاشقی خواهی آموختن
به کشتن فرج یابی از سوختن
مکن گریه بر گور مقتول دوست
برو خرمی کن که مقبول اوست
اگر عاشقی سر مشوی از مرض
چو سعدی فرو شوی دست از غرض
فدایی ندارد ز مقصود چنگ
و گر بر سرش تیر بارند و سنگ
به دریا مرو گفتمت زینهار
وگر می‌روی تن به طوفان سپار
As many asked me to make some videos on Farsi literature, to let them practice standard formal Persian, and to get a bit acquainted with Persian literature, I have decided to make hopefully 1 video each Friday on literature. Each time a piece of poetry is chosen and read for you, I will add an English translation (please note that sometimes there is no recognized poetic translation available, so that I have to translate it on my own which will not be a real literary translation, as this episode one). I will not explain all words and phrases like my other series, but at the end of the clip, you will see some new words that you can take note of and learn. The main purpose of this series is first to let you enjoy our literature, secondly to listen to some standard formal Farsi and learn a bit of vocabulary. I hope you enjoy it.
