shadows of doubt is a procedural detective simulator but wait it's actually good

Shadows of Doubt is not only my game of the year so far, it's one of the most ambitious games I've ever played. Which is strange, because it doesn't sound like a great idea on paper. How have the developers exceeded my expectations?
