New York City officials have contracted labourers to bury those who died from COVID-19 in its potter's field on Hart Island as the death toll from the coronavirus reached grim new records.

The city has used the island since the 19th century to bury New Yorkers with no known next of kin or those whose family are unable to arrange a funeral.

Normally, some 25 bodies are interred each week, but since the coronavirus began to spread rapidly the number has increased. Now, about 24 bodies are being buried daily, five days a week, according to a spokesperson for the Department of Corrections, which oversees the burials.
