In Legends, Luke constructed his lightsaber using designs Obi-Wan Kenobi left in his hut on Tatooine. However, Luke had no focusing crystal, as Darth Sidious had plundered or annihilated most of the natural caches of lightsaber crystals. His only option was to use a method steeped in controversy and shadowed by the Sith. Artificially created synth-crystals had long been rejected by the Jedi Order, as the lightsaber was a living extension of the Force. The Sith manufactured their lightsaber crystals in order to avoid confronting the Jedi where natural crystals grew. With no alternative, Luke placed raw materials in a geological compressor and meditated in the Force, guiding the crystal’s formation. Synth-crystals formed with a red hue; however, Luke made precise adjustments and special manipulations in the Force to forge a green crystal.
