Hey it’s Raj from 3CB.

Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero was taken off vs Alaves with chest discomfort, dizziness, and difficulty breathing and immediately taken to the hospital for a cardiac (heart) exam.

According to multiple reports, he was diagnosed with a “heart arrhythmia”, commonly called an irregular heartbeat - something he has dealt with in the past as well. I spoke with a trusted sports cardiologist to help explain the situation and next steps.

According to a trusted sports cardiologist,a  heart arrhythmia occurs when the heart signals that coordinate the heart’s beating rhythm don’t function properly and thus leads to improper signaling to the heart, causing either a fast heartbeat (tachycardia) or a slowed heartbeat (bradycardia).

With each of those -cardia types, there’s multiple subtypes depending on the root cause.

Aguero will continue to be tested in the following days to determine if the full severity of this heart arrhythmia episode and if anything further needs to be done. In most cases, these are just a blip and no treatment is required.

However, if there is some concern about the risk and an underlying cause is identified, then Aguero may get treatment for that.

Some examples of that treatment can include a cardiac ablation which Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman had this season or placing an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) like Daley Blind had done while at Ajax. Both players were able to continue their careers.

Although any heart condition sounds scary, these are relatively common and as I mentioned before, it’s something Sergio has dealt with before and played on with.

Early reports are that all testing has been positive thus far and Barcelona’s medical staff will be prudent with follow-up testing.

Even if no treatment is required, he’ll continue to be closely monitored in the short-term as he returns to activity. I’ll keep you updated as we learn more.
