Introducing Lake Urmia
#Urmia_Lake is the largest permanent reservoir in West Asia and one of the most famous places in Urmia. Its water is supplied from 60 rivers such as #Zarinerood #Barandoz Shahrchai, Nazlu, Siminerood, Talcherood, Gader and Zola, and it is very salty. Simine River and Zarineh River are the largest rivers in the lake's catchment area, which play a significant role in the lake's water level. Snowfall and rain and springs in the lake have also been effective in supplying water to the lake. Unfortunately, due to the salinity of Lake Urmia and the fact that it is located at the end of the basin, a large part of the water entering it evaporates quickly.
For example, the two islands of #Ashk and #Kobudan have been severely affected by the drying up of Lake Urmia and have lost many of their wildlife species. These islands were once the main habitat of two important species of Iranian yellow deer and Armenian sheep, which have been endangered due to the unfavorable conditions of the lake in recent years.
Due to its ecological importance, unique plant and animal biodiversity, and the existence of local communities, Lake Urmia was declared a protected area in 1346, and in 1355, #unesco introduced it as one of the world's 59 biosphere reserves and a national park. Lake Urmia #National_Park has approximately 102 islands, Shahi Island is the largest and only inhabited island in the lake. Some islands are far away from people's reach and therefore have a rich ecosystem.
Where is Lake Urmia?
Lake Urmia is located 21 kilometers east of Urmia, in the northwest of Iran and on the border of the two provinces of West and East Azerbaijan.
