With my wife Dace we continued touring this side of the map and arrived in Serbia, the epicenter of the old Yugoslavia with its strong Slavic culture. We are going to walk through its streets trying to perceive its way of life to share it with you.
We are in Nis, in the south of Serbia, a city far enough from Belgrade to have its own identity and show us what life is like in the interior of the country.
Life in the interior of Serbia is very different from life in the capital. Inland cities are generally smaller and quieter, with a slower pace of life. The people are generally friendlier and more welcoming, and the culture is more traditional.
Serbia's interior economy is more rural, with a greater dependence on agriculture and livestock. However, in recent years, tourism has been growing in importance, since the interior of the country offers a great variety of natural and cultural and historical landscapes.
In recent surveys we have been asked to reflect on life in the interior as being more relaxed and calm than in the big city. Southern Serbia is a good place to live if you are looking for a simpler life in contact with nature.
The cost of living in the interior of Serbia is generally lower than in Belgrade. Rent, food and utilities are more affordable. However, employment opportunities may be limited. Still, there are some industries that offer employment opportunities, such as agriculture, livestock and tourism.
Inland Serbia has a rich musical tradition, and there are many traditional music festivals held in rural areas. Some of the most popular festivals are the Guča Folk Music Festival, the Zlatibor Folk Music Festival and the Vranje Folk Music Festival. Serbia is a country with delicious cuisine, and there are many food festivals held in the rural zones. Some of the most popular festivals are the Zlatibor Sausage Festival, the Prokuplje Cheese Festival and the Smederevo Wine Festival.
As for education in the interior of Serbia, it is generally of good quality. There are primary schools, secondary schools and universities in major cities, and Nis is a good example of this.
Religion is an important part of Serbian culture, and there are many religious festivals celebrated in rural areas. Some of the most popular festivals are the Festival of the Assumption of the Virgin in Kragujevac, the Epiphany Festival in Niš and the Easter Festival in Jagodina.
