Watch a demonstration of how to record your ECG from your Apple Watch.

Turn on your Apple Watch by pressing the crown on the side, and choose the ECG app as shown.  Once you see the red heart, gently press your finger up against the crown to start recording your ECG. Try to keep both hands still during the 30 second recording; it helps to rest your arm on a table or your lap. You can watch the ECG as it records and you will notice that it will restart the recording on its own if there is too much movement to interpret your ECG properly as either normal sinus rhythm or atrial fibrillation. When it is done recording, you will get an immediate interpretation of your heart rhythm.  If you scroll down, you can choose “add symptom” if you want to label that ECG with whatever you were feeling at the time.  Choose one of the options provided or choose “other” and save.  Finally, press “done” to permanently record the ECG onto your iPhone where you can access them anytime.

More About Atrial Fibrillation:

Every heartbeat should originate from the sinus node in the Right Atrium, the top right chamber of the heart. That is why a normal heart rhythm is called a sinus rhythm. The sinus rhythm is regular, consistent, and adapts to your physical activity; it slows down while you rest or sleep, and speeds up appropriately when you exercise.

Blood enters into the Left Atrium from the lungs, through four pulmonary veins. The lining of the left atrium spreads into the pulmonary veins, and this lining is electrical in nature. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is an abnormal heart rhythm that arises from excitable electrical tissue in the left atrial chamber or pulmonary veins. As the left atrium or the pulmonary veins are stretched or enlarged by physical stress, the exposed nerve endings can fire out of turn like an exposed electrical wire whose insulation is damaged. This results in a sudden, erratic, irregular, and often fast heart beat, known as atrial fibrillation.
