Today I'm taking you away from the tourist areas of Khaosan Road and Sukhumvit to Wongwian Yai in Bangkok for a 3 am Thai Street Food feast in the back alleys of Thonburi.

As the name suggests 1am Curry Rice ข้าวแกง ตี1opens at 1 am but that was far too early for me so I headed down at 3 am. By then the queues had gone and I was able to order without waiting.

I had Thai green curry, panang curry, tom kha gai, fishcakes and their signature crispy pork. All was fantastic and cost me 70 baht!

THIS IS REAL BANGKOK STREET FOOD!

About the area:

Wongwian Yai is a prominent landmark and neighborhood located in Thonburi, on the western side of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, Thailand. Its name translates to "big circle" in Thai, referencing the large roundabout that sits at the center of the area.
Here are some key points about Wongwian Yai:
Location: Wongwian Yai is situated near the intersection of Charoen Krung Road and Somdet Phra Chao Taksin Road. It's easily accessible via public transportation, including the BTS Skytrain (Wongwian Yai station) and the Chao Phraya Express Boat.
Historical Significance: Historically, Wongwian Yai served as a transportation hub for travelers heading to and from Bangkok. It was a major stop for those traveling by train from the southern provinces of Thailand. The area has retained some of its old-world charm, with traditional shophouses and markets still prevalent.
Landmark: The most iconic feature of Wongwian Yai is the large roundabout adorned with a statue of King Taksin the Great, a revered monarch in Thai history. The statue commemorates his role in liberating Siam (ancient Thailand) from Burmese occupation in the late 18th century.
Market and Food: Wongwian Yai is known for its vibrant street food scene and bustling market. There are numerous stalls and vendors offering a variety of local dishes, snacks, and fresh produce. The area is especially popular for its seafood, grilled meats, and traditional Thai desserts.
Community and Lifestyle: The neighborhood surrounding Wongwian Yai has a mix of residential and commercial areas. It retains a strong sense of community, with locals often gathering at the market or nearby parks for leisure and socializing.
Development: In recent years, Wongwian Yai has undergone some development, with new condominiums and commercial buildings springing up alongside the traditional architecture. However, efforts have been made to preserve the area's cultural heritage and character.
Overall, Wongwian Yai offers visitors a glimpse into both the historical and modern aspects of Bangkok life, with its bustling markets, iconic landmarks, and vibrant street scenes.

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this YouTube channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!

If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!
