On January 23, 2031, Comet C/2014 UN271, also known as comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein will be closest to the sun.

This is a massive comet that is around 160 kilometers or 99.4 miles in diameter.

To put that in perspective, it is 6 times larger than Phobos, a moon that orbits Mars.  It is also about 15 times larger than Halley's Comet.

Originally it was identified as a dwarf planet, but later reclassified as a comet as activity was detected.

It was first discovered on October 20, 2014 by Gary Bernstein and Pedro Bernardinelli.

This animation shows it's current location as well as it's path from the now until it visits our solar system.

Current calculations show this will not likely hit Earth but will be around Saturn's orbit.

Considering how large this comet is, it will likely put on quite a display for astronomers around the world.

Here are some answers to some frequently asked questions about this megacomet.

Where is Comet C/2014 UN271?

Right now it is 2,896,377,568 kilometers from Earth traveling at a speed of 9.5 km per second.

If you have a good enough telescope, you may be able to spot it using these coordinates in the constellation of Horologium:

Right Ascension: 02 h 36m 05s
Declination: -56° 13’ 05”

Will comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein hit earth?

Current calculations show it will be closest to the sun around the orbit of Saturn, so it is unlikely to impact the Earth.
