The Falklands War was a conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the disputed Falkland Islands, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands. The conflict began on April 2, 1982, when Argentine forces invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. The British responded by sending a naval task force to retake the islands. After several weeks of intense fighting, the British forces were able to retake the islands, and the conflict officially ended on June 14, 1982, with the surrender of the Argentine forces. The war resulted in the deaths of 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British military personnel, and three Falkland Islanders.
