Sufi Muhammad was the founder of Tehreek-e-Naffaz-e-Shariat-e-Muhammadi (TNSM) and also the father-in-law of Mullah Fazlullah, the notorious head of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Sufi Muhammad came to prominence when he rejected the Supreme Court's decision to merge the erstwhile PATA regions into Khyber Pakhtunkha (KP) on the grounds that the decision was subservient to the procedural law laid down by foreigners.
In 1994, the government was forced to establish Shariat courts in Malakand Division. After 911, Sufi Muhammad started taking people to Afghanistan for Jihad. He was arrested by authorities upon return but then released in 2007 to woo Mullah Fazlullah and his men.
The move failed to bear fruit as despite establishing Shariat courts in Malakand Division once again on TNSM's demand, TTP breached the promise and moved into Buner after which a military operation was launched in Swat.
Sufi Muhammad went into hiding but was later arrested and was only released in 2018 on medical grounds. He died on July 10, 2019 but the damage his legacy did to the society is irreparable.
