No one wants disaster to strike their organization, but sometimes it's inevitable. In the case of unpredictable events like fires, natural disasters, cyber attacks, or disease outbreaks, it's imperative to have a plan in place for how to keep the business running -- that's business continuity planning.

BCP is the proactive process of understanding company weaknesses and threats in a crisis and how to address them. The most basic goal of BCP is to be able to keep essential functions up and running with as little downtime as possible. Deciding which elements are essential is the first phase, followed by plan development, then plan testing.
