Lecture on Ralph Waldo Emerson and an introduction to Transcendentalism

An introduction to the literary & philosophical movement of Transcendentalism.

Working first as an itinerant school-teacher and then Unitarian minister, Ralph Waldo Emerson married his first love, Ellen Louisa Tucker, in 1829. Less than two years later, she died from tuberculosis. Questioning his relationship with what he called “historical Christianity,” Emerson resigned his ministry and sailed for Italy.

After travelling through Europe for nine months, Emerson returned, eventually remarried and dedicated himself to writing and lecturing. Later becoming the most influential American writer of the 19th century, Emerson and his friend Henry David Thoreau articulated the philosophical movement which would become known as Transcendentalism.

Ralph Waldo Emerson self-published his first book, Nature, in 1836.
