Depending on where your pain is will help doctors decide what’s causing your foot pain. “Arthritis pain is extremely common. That will either happen in the big toe joint, or it will happen in the mid-part of the foot,” explained Dr. Chelsea Viola, a podiatric surgeon on the medical staff of Lee Health.

Pain in the back of the heel is also common. “That can be something like Achilles tendonitis, it can also be something like bursitis, and it can be related to spurs which are attached to your heel and are attached to the Achilles tendon,” she explained.

But the most common type of pain she sees is plantar fasciitis. “Bottom of the heel or when you’re walking, is usually, probably 95 percent of the time, plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a long facial structure, but it’s similar to a very strong ligament that connects to the bottom of your heel all the way up to the ball of the foot,” said Dr. Viola.

Patients will typically have pain in the heel of the foot—that’s because the heel is where the fascia attaches to the bone. As it gets inflamed, it starts to pull itself away from the heel bone causing the pain.  “Right when you get up in the morning that’s when it’s going to hurt you the most. It is similar to an arthritic process, you get something called post-static dyskinesia, which is a pain when you’ve been resting,” she said.

Fortunately, the pain can be treated with stretching and physical therapy. “As you strengthen the muscles, tendons, and ligaments around your joints, it takes some of the pressure away from the joints and puts it on the muscle. It does help,” said Dr. Viola.

Patients are encouraged to do daily stretches to keep the pain from coming back. “For some people, unfortunately, it can get to the point where your plantar fascia will actually tear itself,” she said.

Making it important to schedule an appointment if you are having pain.
