Rotterdam is a city and municipality in the western Netherlands, located in the province of South Holland. It is the second largest city and fourth-most populous urban area of the Netherlands with a population of 610,874 as of 1 April 2016.

The population of Rotterdam exceeded one million inhabitants for first time by January 2011. The agglomeration has grown well beyond the city's administrative borders.

At that time, Rotterdam was the largest seaport in Europe; still, in 1950, it remained only the second-largest port of the Netherlands. From 1960 on, expansion of container shipping terminals disrupted traditional relations with ports upstream along Rhine and the cities of southwestern Germany. By 1990, Rotterdam had surpassed Amsterdam as the largest port in Europe.

In July 2013, Rotterdam was officially recognized as a World Heritage Site. The Erasmus University is one of three prestigious universities in Rotterdam. In addition to that, Rotterdam has a university of applied sciences- the Hogeschool Rotterdam.

Most of the tourists in Rotterdam are from other countries, mainly Germany and Great Britain, but also from other European countries including Belgium, France and The Netherlands itself. In recent years there has been a steady increase in tourism from other EU member states as well as Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea.

The port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe and has a capacity for handling about 450 million tons of cargo per year. The port calls at over 1300 sea-going vessels every year and more than 1000 ocean-going liners visit the city each year. In total, more than 3600 ships would pass through Rotterdam each day.

Rotterdam's lively atmosphere is due to the city's inhabitants' hectic lifestyles and its location in the Rhine-Meuse delta . Its food scene is internationally acknowledged by residents, expats, students and tourists alike. As of 2015, Rotterdam was listed as "unesco's City of Design".
