In Norse mythology, at the beginning, the world of fire was in the south and a desert of ice and snow was in the north. Between them,  it was the vast emptiness (Ginnungagap).

The first giant ,Ymir, was created when heat and cold met. Ymir drink the milk of Audhumla a holy cow and  she created the great father of Odin, Vili and Ve.

The three brothers will slay the ancient giant and create Midgard.

The Ymir skull created the sky dome. For protecting mankind from giants a wall was made from his eyebrows. The mountain form from his bones and his blood become the rivers.  

The first man was also created from a tree by Odin, Vili, and Vé.  They also created the sun and the moon who needed to move fast because two giant wolves pursued them.
