Nuremberg (often called Nämberch in Nuremberg) is an independent city in the administrative district of Middle Franconia in the Free State of Bavaria. With around 540,000 inhabitants (October 2022), the city is the second largest city in Bavaria after Munich and the fourteenth largest city in Germany. Together with the direct neighboring cities of Fürth , Erlangen and Schwabach , Nuremberg forms one of the three metropolises in Bavaria. Nuremberg is one of the major cities in Germany with a decidedly multicultural society .
The most important landmarks include some buildings along theHistorical Mile , especially the Nuremberg Castle . In addition, other aristocratic buildings and castles of the old HRR imperial city have been preserved. Outside the old town, the Nuremberg cityscape is characterized by dense urban development with a high proportion of Wilhelminian and post-war buildings and a few high-rise buildings up to the Ringstrasse , north and south of the Pegnitz .
Nuremberg's Christmas market, the German National Museum and several other museums are also of national importance . The city gained global recognition in the 20th century during the National Socialist era , when the annual Nazi Party Rallies were held on the Nazi Party Rally Grounds and the Nuremberg Laws were passed. After the Second World War , however, the city became the scene of the first judgments based on international criminal law with the Nuremberg trials and earned the title of city of human rights. The service sector, cutting-edge technology, industrial production (including electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and vehicle parts) and the Nuremberg Exhibition Center (including Spielwarenmesse , Consumenta , GaLaBau , BIOFACH , IWA OutdoorClassics , BrauBeviale) are of great economic importance. Nuremberg is the seat of the federal authorities , the Federal Employment Agency and the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, as well as the Bavarian State Ministry of Finance and Home (“Home Ministry”) and the Bavarian State Ministry of Health and Care.
