This composition was originally composed in raag pilu and sung by Ustad Mohammad Hussain Sarahang, who is recognized by many as the greatest vocalist of Afghanistan. The poem was composed by Abul-Ma'ānī Mīrzā Abdul-Qādir Bēdil, also known as Bedil Dehlavī, an Indian Sufi, and considered one of the greatest Indo-Persian poets, next to Amir Khusrau, who lived most of his life during the reign of Aurangzeb, the sixth Mughal emperor.

This poem by Abdul-Qādir Bēdil explores themes of ambition, interconnectedness, inner peace, fear, and obedience to divine will. The poet questions the nature of ambition and its place in existence, reflects on the interconnectedness of life, and expresses a desire for inner peace amidst worldly chaos. He also expresses a fear of spiritual destitution and separation from the divine. Ultimately, the poem concludes with acceptance of fate and obedience to divine command, symbolized by the imagery of a candle burning until consumed entirely.
