Reactive-Current Compensation SIMATIC Manager Step7-300 SIEMENS
The percentage of reactive current of the overall current in the supply conductor of the main distribution
to a production department, with several machine tools, depends on the number and utilisation of the
connected machines or their drive motors. To compensate for the reactive current or to increase the
efficiency, for many years automatic group compensation systems have been used that guarantee an
automatic adaptation of capacitor power to the reactive-current demand of the production department.
Depending on the increase or reduction of reactive current consumed by the machine tool group, capacitor
groups can be switched on and off manually or automatically. Since some of the contactor relays
no longer operate properly and must be replaced, a small PLC system must be used instead of the
contactor relays.
Functional description
Every time button S1 “switch on” is pressed, a capacitor group is connected, every time button S2
“switch off” is pressed, a capacitor group is disconnected.
Note: The current flow charts on pages 4 and 5 only contain the pushbuttons for manual operation. The changeover
to automatic operation, where a controller with change-over contact activates the stepwise connection
and disconnection instead of a pushbutton, is not illustrated.
