A PLC, or Programmable Logic Controller, is the brains of machines in industrial automation.  Inputs such as push buttons, switches, and sensors are the eyes and ears of the PLC, letting it know the state of the machine.  Outputs such as lights, motor starters, and solenoids or the arms, legs, and voice of the machine, which make action happen.  The processor reads the states of each input and updates it's outputs according to the PLC program.  PLC programs are commonly written in ladder logic but can also be written in function blocks and structured text.
